Gender Inequality in Construction Remains a Persistent Challenge

Gender inequality continues to present a real challenge across the construction sector, despite the increasing focus placed on diversity in recent years.

While there has been some progress, it remains uneven. Women are still significantly underrepresented across many roles, particularly in site-based and senior positions. That points to something deeper than a recruitment issue.

Perception still plays a part. Construction is often seen as a traditional, male-dominated industry, and that perception hasn’t shifted as quickly as it needs to. For many, it’s not an obvious or accessible career path.

But bringing more people into the industry is only one side of it. Retention is just as important, and this is where the sector continues to struggle. Career progression, workplace culture, and flexibility all influence whether people stay.

There is also a visibility gap. Without clear examples of women in leadership roles, it becomes harder to demonstrate what a long-term career in the industry can look like.

Addressing this isn’t about a single initiative or campaign. It requires consistency. Consistency across hiring, development, and leadership with a real willingness to challenge how things have traditionally been done.
