Northern Line Refurbishment: Turning the “Misery Line” into a Modern Transport Experience

Client Challenge

London Underground commissioned a comprehensive upgrade of 10 stations on the southern section of the Northern Line (Kennington to Morden). This complex programme consolidated multiple initiatives, including tunnel lining repairs, electrical system replacements, heritage station refurbishments, services upgrades and draft relief works..

The challenging project involved:

  • Deep-tunnel stations in confined, live rail environments
  • The preservation of heritage stations originally designed by architect Charles Holden, who played a major role in shaping the appearance of London in the early 1920s
  • Station operations needed to continue uninterrupted
  • Work schedules were tightly limited to a four-hour overnight window
  • Maintaining a perfect safety record with zero lost-time incidents
